Desert Aire Celebrates Earth Day and New Low GWP Refrigerant
Overview
MILWAUKEE, WI, April 22, 2025: " Happy Earth Day! Desert Aire is committed to reducing global warming to help to make dehumidification more sustainable and bring HVAC into a greener future.
Due to the EPA regulations, all units in the HVAC industry manufactured as of January 1st, 2025, require an approved, low GWP refrigerant. As of 1/1/2025 all units manufactured at Desert Aire incorporate R-454B refrigerant. Desert Aire selected R-454B as the refrigerant due to its heat transfer characteristics, very low GWP, and temperature/pressure relationship. It is an A2L refrigerant with lower GWP and it is non-toxic and has low flammability.
Significant testing has been done by the insurance industry and this refrigerant is now being written in to building codes as acceptable with certain provisions. R-454B is approved in the HVAC application and has a GWP that is 78% lower than R-410A. In addition, R-454B operates at similar pressure and temperatures as R-410 in most applications.
As the HVAC industry continues to be concerned with climate change and has an excellent history of improving its products to be more energy-efficient as well as making environmentally-friendly changes in the type of refrigerant used inside its equipment.
More information about transitioning to low-GWP alternatives in commercial refrigeration is available from the EPA’s Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) https://www.epa.gov/snap.
Information regarding a new UL safety standard (UL 60335-2-40) required for the R-454B refrigerant is available at UL https://www.ul.com/insights/updated-requirements-refrigerant-detection-systems.
