Success at the 2017 AHR Expo

By Keith Coursin, President, Desert Aire Corp.

Desert Aire was one of the many exhibitors at the 2017 AHR Expo in Las Vegas this past January. As a company we were very pleased with the results of the show, and statistically it was the largest AHR Expo in history! There were over 2,000 exhibitors who set a net show space record of 500,000 square feet with over 68,000 people walking the show floors.

Showcasing New Dehumidification Equipment, New Energy Metrics

The Desert Aire booth showcased several new dehumidification equipment products. More importantly, we provided an introduction to 2 new energy metrics. The metrics were recently added to ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013 -- Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Standard 90.1 has been a benchmark for commercial building energy codes in the United States. It's also been a key basis for codes and standards around the world for more than 35 years. Standard 90.1 specifically has added two new dehumidification metrics.

The first new metric provides a moisture removal efficiency measurement for indoor pool dehumidifiers. This new term referred to as “MRE” is defined in AHRI Standard 910, Performance Rating of Indoor Pool Dehumidifiers. Desert Aire is proud to announce that its line of indoor pool dehumidifiers is compliant with this new metric.

The metric provides a measurement of pounds of condensate per kilowatt of power input. This provides an ability to measure the energy efficiency of indoor pool dehumidifiers in a similar way that an energy efficiency ratio (EER) was defined for air conditioners. The rating occurs at a typical pool condition of 820F/60% RH.

The second metric provides a solution to the more complicated subject of rating DX-DOAS systems. This new addition to the ASHRAE 90.1 standard provides a definition of Integrated Seasonal Moisture Removal Efficiency (ISMRE); and Integrated Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (ISCOP) if the system is a heat pump.

These metrics are defined in ANSI/AHRI Standard 920 Performance Rating of DX-Dedicated Outdoor Air System Units. This standard recognizes 13 different classifications of DX-DOAS systems. Desert Aire announced that its DOAS systems not only meet this standard, they exceed it by up to two times whether the metric used is ISMRE or ISCOP.

The standard is now a tool that design engineers can use to place a simple metric within their HVAC system specifications. Doing so ensures their customers achieve the goals of properly treating ventilation air, but doing so by using the most energy efficient method.

Co-Starring The GrowAire™ Series

Desert Aire’s booth also featured our GrowAire™ series of environmental control systems for the grow room and indoor farming industry. These grow room dehumidification systems eliminate the need to install separate air conditioning systems for lights-on modes and dehumidifiers for lights-off modes. By integrating environmental control needs into a single system customers can maintain precise vapor pressure deficits (differentials) to increase their crop yields, while eliminating the moisture that can cause mold and mildew damage.

Advancing ASHRAE Causes

Across town at the ASHRAE Winter Conference, Desert Aire engineering executives were helping to advance the Society’s causes as well as the standards and technologies that impact Desert Aire customers and their building users. On Monday there was the meeting of Technical Committee 9.8 Large Building Air-Conditioning Applications. Tuesday, Desert Aire executives met with industry peers at the meeting of Technical Committee 8.10 Mechanical Dehumidification Equipment And Heat Pipes

A Bright Future With Multistack

Finally, Desert Aire was pleased to announce its acquisition by Multistack (visit http://www.multistack.com), another quality HVAC industry firm that focuses on energy efficient systems as it provides solutions to the chiller segment. It’s exciting to think of future possibilities and the new products the united companies can create.

For those of you who could not travel to Las Vegas, please visit the Resources/Video Gallery area of Desert Aire’s website and watch “Showtime!”, a short video with highlights of our AHR Expo experiences. The video does a great job showing everyone's enthusiasm at our booth.
